Data insights

Our mission

Challenge

The lack of interoperability in container shipping means data cannot flow seamlessly across the end-to-end journey of ships and their containers. This negatively impacts virtually every shipping activity. Poor data flows lead to limited visibility into the status and location of vessels, cargo and equipment, creating “blind spots” along multi-modal container journeys. This lack of transparency causes unexpected delays that ripple across the supply chain, causing disruption that can have significant economic and ecological impact. For all supply chain stakeholders, limited data visibility increases operational costs and reduces sustainability by creating inefficiency, uncertainty and waste.

Objective

DCSA envisions a digitally interconnected container shipping industry in which stakeholders exchange accurate, real-time data from end-to-end of every shipping transaction. By enabling interoperability across the ecosystem, DCSA standards establish a foundation for on-demand visibility into the status and whereabouts of cargo, vessels, equipment and documentation. For logistics managers, better data insights help lessen the impact of unexpected delays by enabling data-driven alternative planning. Widespread adoption of DCSA standards will lower costs while improving the efficiency, reliability and sustainability of international trade.

DCSA's approach

DCSA collaborates with carriers, shippers, industry associations and other stakeholders to develop vendor-neutral, technology-agnostic, open-source standards for IT and non-competitive business practices to ensure the interoperability of container shipping solutions. By working toward the widespread adoption of the standards, DCSA aims to establish a foundation for the seamless end-to-end exchange of digital shipping data and documentation.

Key benefits

When using standards it is possible to get up to date data insights. Which leads to these three key benefits:

  1. Eliminate uncertainty
Gain more accurate insights into the status and whereabouts of cargo, vessels and equipment. Get proactive notification of delays and disruption to enable alternative operational plans.
  2. Increase supply chain continuity
Eliminate “blind spots” along the container journey and get proactive and timely schedule updates to help prevent supply chain disruption and promote an unhindered flow of goods.
  3. Greener supply chain
Support a greener supply chain with increased visibility into port call and equipment lifecycle activities. Better data insights support more efficient sailing schedules and can dramatically reduce waiting times at ports.

Standardisation in container shipping fosters improved data insights by enabling seamless integration of diverse systems and databases. This streamlined data exchange enhances analytics capabilities, allowing stakeholders to gain deeper insights into supply chain operations, identify trends, and make informed decisions for enhanced efficiency and performance optimisation.
